This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by providing complex public health microbiologist training to perform laboratory testing and interpretation of results for a variety of infectious diseases of public health importance. The intern will participate in a structured microbiologist training program and may carry out supervised studies of limited scientific scope and complexity such as the gathering and analysis of testing data for various laboratory projects. They will also provide surge laboratory support, if needed, in the event of a public health emergency.
The incumbent works under the general supervision of Microbial Disease Laboratory (MDL) Branch Chief.

Telework Information
Travel may be required for this position. Reimbursement for travel takes into consideration an employee’s designated headquarters, as reflected in the duty statement, and is subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
Possession of an LFS approval letter to participate in the Public Health Microbiologist training program; vaccinations may be recommended.
