Job Description

The Safety Coordinator will facilitate compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines, providing advice on measures to minimize hazards or unhealthy situations.  This position will facilitate monthly safety meetings, audits, investigations, reporting and make recommendations on correction. In addition, this position will build an emergency preparedness plan and work directly with necessary parties to facilitate annual checks on facilities and processes.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure Regulatory Compliance & Safety Culture
    • Establish and maintain a safe workplace in accordance with OSHA and Oregon-specific health and safety regulations.
    • Promote a proactive culture of safety, health, and wellness across all departments and clinical settings.
  • Policy Development & Oversight
    • Support the creation, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety policies and programs.
    • Conduct regular reviews of safety protocols to ensure alignment with evolving legislation and best practices.
  • Training & Education
    • Develop and deliver OSHA-compliant training programs for all staff, including onboarding and annual refreshers.
    • Provide targeted instruction on safety-related topics such as sharps handling, PPE use, and infection control.
  • Risk Assessment & Prevention
    • Conduct routine and ad hoc risk assessments across clinical and administrative areas.
    • Identify hazards and implement preventative measures to mitigate risks, including ergonomic evaluations for staff.
  • Facility Safety & Compliance Monitoring
    • Perform regular inspections of facilities, equipment, and staff practices to ensure compliance and identify non-conformities (e.g., improper storage of sharps, blocked exits).
    • Oversee safe installation, maintenance, and disposal of hazardous materials and medical waste.
  • Incident Response & Reporting
    • Intervene immediately to stop unsafe acts or processes.
    • Investigate incidents and near-misses to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
    • Manage and document worker’s compensation claims and maintain incident logs.
  • Emergency Preparedness & Crisis Planning
    • Lead the development and maintenance of a comprehensive emergency preparedness and crisis response program.
    • Coordinate regular drills and simulations for fire, severe weather, active threat, and medical emergencies.
    • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners (e.g., emergency services, public health) to ensure readiness and continuity of care during crises.
    • Develop and disseminate crisis communication protocols and evacuation plans.
  • Data & Reporting
    • Prepare and present safety reports, trend analyses, and compliance metrics to leadership.
    • Use data to inform safety improvements and strategic planning.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Partner with clinical leadership, compliance, HR, and facilities teams to embed safety into daily operations.
    • Serve as a liaison to regulatory agencies and community safety partners.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health, Environmental Safety, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a healthcare, behavioral health, or clinical safety role.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA regulations, emergency preparedness standards, and healthcare safety protocols.
  • Experience developing and implementing safety programs, conducting risk assessments, and leading training initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of crisis planning, emergency response coordination, and continuity of operations in clinical settings.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external agencies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and safety management systems.
  • Certification in safety or emergency management (e.g., CHSP, CEM, OSHA 30-Hour) preferred.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Typical office environment requiring standing, sitting, walking, bending, and lifting up to 25 plus pounds.  May be exposed to patient and environment conditions such as unpleasant sights, smells and contagious diseases.
